I don’t usually comment on these things.

gleeks:

But personally I felt like all issues were dealt with extremely delicately in ‘The First Time’ and the PTC are blowing things out of proportion.

I don’t think it would have influenced young viewers to go out and have sex at all, I feel like all the messages from last nights show was make sure your 100% ready and to wait until your sure you’ve found the right person.

How about you guys? Do you agree with the PTC?

I don’t agree with PTC, but I don’t agree with the alternative either. The episode didn’t sit right with me because GLEE hasn’t been known to take sex seriously in the past AT ALL. They switch around couples like clockwork, already de-virginized Finn in a haphazard way, and represent Puck as really careless. I realize these actors are well into their 20s-30s and that may be appropriate for their age, but I think the writers forget they are dealing with high school situations. The show does feature a lot of sex, something that was never a huge thing during my high school years, but now it’s all the rage? What if those high school kids viewing this episode think “now I have to find the love of my life in high school, right now, because that’s what I see on TV”. It might make them feel like shit for not having sex yet. Who knows… But I can’t glorify a “serious” episode about sex when GLEE’s past has been so inconsistent and they don’t even take their OWN characters seriously. I still think the episode is counter productive. Lea Michelle’s character of course wants sex to better her acting ability (which is plain bullshit, what AWFUL writing for Artie) but decides she is wrong. But in the end she has her cake anyway. It’s like, nothing is really learned when you still get what you want a DAY LATER. Plus it was out of pity for Finn, which doesn’t tie into love or finding the right person at all. The positive side is that the Kurt and Blaine stuff was handled well, and while the same things apply, (Blaine needs sex for play, says they should wait until ready, two days later he gets it anyway because I guess they’re ready now even though nothing significant really happened), FOX totally set the standard on how gay sex/relationships can be represented. Also, I will say it again. The West Side Story scenes were spectacular. Probably unrealistic for a high school production, and I got to remember it is television, but Naya Rivera stole the show.
